Donate to save Ajax Road Grassland

Ajax Road Grassland is really special. Hidden within the Altona industrial precinct, it provides an essential link to Truganina Swamp and Altona’s coastal parklands, and along Laverton Creek inland to a series of grasslands dotted all the way to the city’s edge. It’s a large, vital piece of nature, home to an exceptional population of critically endangered Spiny Rice-flowers, dense stands of Kangaroo Grass and the rare Arching Flax-Lily.

Grasslands in Victoria are critically endangered. Less than 2% remain of the vast grasslands that used to spread from the Yarra River to the South Australian border. Extensive, good-quality patches like Ajax Road must be protected, not cleared. But that’s exactly what the private developer wants to do – clear over 15 hectares of critically endangered grassland, and subdivide.

The Grassy Plains Network worked tirelessly to ensure that Hobsons Bay City Council rejected the developer’s planning permit. But the developer and their lawyers appealed this decision at a recent hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

If we don’t act now, this critically endangered grassland will be seriously threatened by development. A win for the developer will likely set a precedent for the destruction of other grasslands.

We must defend Ajax Road Grassland.

Please donate to this urgent appeal today to fund the campaign to save Ajax Road Grassland.

Your gift will be matched thanks to the generous support of a private donor and a contribution from the Victorian National Parks Association.

Please donate today to help us reach our target of $26,000.

Your gift will:

  • Provide legal advice.
  • Fund campaign actions to save Ajax Road Grassland, including continuing to raise community awareness and appreciation of the importance of this grassland and the threats it faces.
  • Help us advocate for an Environmental Significance Overlay, and for a proper biodiversity plan for the whole of Hobsons Bay.
  • Encourage the community to protect critically endangered grasslands and their unique plants and wildlife.

Please donate to protect this critically endangered grassland from the developer’s destruction. All donations will be matched up to a total of $13,000.
