Grasslands are not invisible

Incredibly, no decent, ground-truthed map of our grasslands exists. That shows how ignored and under-resourced our grasslands are. No wonder they are critically endangered.

This database and accompanying map are very much a work in progress. They are put out into the wild to grow with your help. We’d love any feedback. Please send us corrections, content, links, pics and thoughts on useability.

Ironically, we’re using ecommerce product catalog software, so feel free to shop around! Who says a ‘Green Wall Street’ can’t work?

Ajax Road Grassland

Nationally significant grassland with Critically Endangered Spiny Rice-flower and rare salt-tolerant Kangaroo Grass. Adjacent to state-significant Truganina Swamp and linked to Ramsar wetlands. Privately owned and poorly managed. GPN and local council blocked attempts to develop and clear the grassland. Part of a proposed Hobsons Bay Coast to Grassland biolink.

2: A vast sea of Kangaroo Grass
3: Embedded rock, never ploughed
4: Expanse of Kangaroo Grass less obvious now after several years of La Nina
5: Looking north from a management track on the southern edge
6: Looking west
7: Occasionally waterlogged
8: On a residential street, passive recreation could provide a positive buffer
9: The grassland interface is unsightly here, with dumping and rampant weeds

Notes: McDougall 1987: 'The site has not been grazed recently and appears in excellent condition. Weed cover is sparse. The mosaic of Themeda and Danthonia [Rytidosperma] domination is exemplary of Tussock Grassland structure. The site should be retained for educational and research purposes.'
